SPORTS FINISH THE WEEKEND ON A HIGH

Sports 4- Coventry United 3

Have a frustrating result on Saturday, Sports returned to winning ways against Coventry United on Monday. A brace from Tom Smith and Ellis Champkins got the boys over the line after an end to end Cup style encounter.

It was certainly a lively affair, and neither side created many chances in a competitive first half. The one notable chance fell to Luke Swann after an excellent move from defence to attack. The Coventry keeper stood up well and he deflected a goal bound drive over the bar.
After a defensive mix up on the stroke of half time, the visitors went into the break 1 nil up. Dylan Parker did well to read the back pass and he then tucked the ball under Treml as he rushed to close the striker down.

Sports lept out of the traps in the second half, perhaps the frustrations from Saturday were still evident and they were keen to make amends. Controlling the opening 20 minutes of the second half, Easington equalised and then got their noses in front with two goals from man of the match Tom Smith. Smith was on hand to bundle over the line for his first after the ball was headed back into the box from a clearance at a corner by Dan Watkin. He was then on hand to power home a header directly from another corner during a period of the game when Sports were well on top.

Easington then extended their lead through a calm finish from Ethan Champkins. After another fine move, Swann cut the ball back for Champkins to side foot into the bottom corner.
Coventry certainly came back into the game and it made for a cup tie feel to end the game. The visitors made it 3-2 through a nice strike from Scott Hammond from the edge of the box. Sports, and Ethan Champkins, then scored again to make it 4-2 before Connor Mort tapped in from close range to set up a nervy 5 minutes.

Sports held on and picked up a welcome 3 points after missing out on Saturday.

Sports 1 – Yaxley FC 3

Sports were certainly happy on Bank Holiday Monday after a below par performance against Yaxley on Saturday. At this stage of the season, you cannot read too much into the table and so it proved to be the case. After a terrific second half against Bristol Manor Farm the previous week, Sports struggled to make their dominant spells count.

Matches can swing one way or another in just split second moments, and this was the case against Yaxley. Both teams had spells of dominating in the first half, but Sports were in control in the second half and just needed to take their chances. A great save from the visitors’ keeper, the intervention of the cross bar and then two chances going just the wrong side of the post all came quickly together and then against the run of play, Yaxley were clinical in front of goal.

The joys of football when probably a draw would have been more of a fair result.
